Just a follow up - Microsoft related.

You may remember me ranting about Open Document formats a couple of years ago. During my ranting I recall pointing out that Microsoft was making fun of their own customers for using their own products, genius advertising. At least the car manufacturers like to occasionally use classic versions of their cars in their ads to push the new ones, Microsoft wants to call you a fool for using their classics. My link from the older post is gone now, but this one covers the basics.
The reason I dragged this relic of a post up is a link I found on Slashdot. See, for years I called Windows crap. Then Win2K hit and after a couple of service packs I didn't hate it (during the early 2K days is when I went Linux all the way). I still used (and still use) Windows at work. I hated the original XP, but I actually dislike it less with later service packs. I've actually stopped actively recommending people to drop Windows because it sucks, I stopped doing that some time ago, I would still recommend a change for feel good things such as licensing, security, cost, etc... but not just because it straight up sucks. Thanks to numerous lawsuits they've actually become a bit less predatory and they're actually working with companies to make sure their products work on Windows instead of actively altering their OS to break the product, like they did with the Novell Client and Netscape. All in all I would say Windows 2000 and Windows XP reached "end of life" as relativly decent operating systems.
They're undoing my acceptance of them now. See, what's the point of me not warning people away from Windows on grounds of security, stability and all around crappiness if they're going to do it anyways? They were even making inroads on the moral issues, oh, I haven't forgiven the sins of the past, but they were beginning to make up for them slowly.
At this point, I don't know what to do. I have been putting XP on all the computers I've built for family members (except my parents, their hardware craps on Windows but runs Linux fine). If Microsoft is going to tell me Windows sucks, nobody wants Vista (I've had lots of my less savy relatives tell me they don't want it), I guess I'm going to have to start pushing them towards Apple (cost to much) or Linux. I honestly haven't been pushing any of my relatives towards that, except the teenaged ones, but Microsoft calling their own OS's crap may just convince me to do it.
